Title of the paper : “Afterwards

Author or topic : Judy Malloy

Abstract : I decided to choose the hypertext “Afterwards” by Judy Malloy for my Second Paper because this text fulfills the two main conditions I was looking for in a hypertext : a text with a reading easy to follow and understand and that could offer a good analysis from the perspective of Tools.
Firstly, I have introuduced Judy Malloy with information taken from her personal website. And then I have divided my work into five parts : A little Introduction about the hypertext (what it’s about, the characters), the Reading I have made of the text (following different orders of reading), the analysis of the Tools the author has used, the e-mails with the author (letting her know I was working on one of her hypertexts) and finally the Conclusion (where I talk about my thoughts after reading my first hypertext).

Title of the paper :  Richard Pryll’s Hyperfiction “Lies”: Analysis of Tools

Author or topic :  Richard Pryll Jr.

© Richard Pryll

Abstract :  I’ve decided to analyse the aspect of Tools because I really liked the way Mr. Pryll put the information together, how he made up the story, its creativity and even more his closeness to the reader and style of writing.  On this paper I’ll be treating the aspects focused on the layout (how the story is presented), the colors used, the simplicity of the design, the fonts used. etc.
I must say that the information about the author is rather scant and his website is kind of messy, with different designs and pages, showing the same information over and over, and even some pages unavailable or removed, maybe due to its date of creation, back in 1994.  But I’ll do my best to bring trustworthy information and create an interesting analysis from my point of view. While I was working on this paper I decided to work on a blog which shows the progression of my investigation. You can take a look but remember that the final and correct draft is right here.

Title of the paper: I Have Said Something about Storyspace vs HTML

(An analysis of the tools used in I Have Said Nothing by J. Yellowlees Douglas)

Author: Jane Yellowlees Douglas

Jane Y. Douglas

Abstract: From printed books to many hours of tedious code writing, from coding to learning how to use friendly interfaces like Storyspace, and from Storyspace to a future with even friendlier and more complete online tools.

In less than four decades, hypertext writing has been gestated, born, developed and improved to such an extent that anyone who owns a laptop can nowadays publish their stories for free and virtually in no time at all.

It’s interesting to see how writers from the nineties struggled against limited net resources in order to recreate the interface of hypertext writing software. This is the case of I Have Said Nothing, by J. Yellowlees Douglas, who tried to solve the problem using HTML. Did she succeed?

Title of the paper : A Temporal Analysis of About Time

Author or topic : Rob Swigart‘s About Time

Abstract : In this second paper I am going to analyse the temporal aspects of Rob Swigart’s About Time, a hypertextual story. This format gives way to a great amount of possibilities regarding chronological order, and About Time makes a very interesting exploitation of these possibilities. Following the non-linearity by which this text is driven, I have analysed each chapter separately so that any of them could be accessed at any given moment. Unfortunately due to the technical restrictions imposed by the author I have not been able to provide links to specific parts of the texts that are quoted, however they have been tagged appropiately for an easier access from About Time’s main website. This paper’s index can be viewed by clicking here, or you can enter directly into the different parts, divided in an Introduction, a Conclusion and two separate timelines (Past: Part IPart IIPart III; Present:Part IPart IIPart III). This same paper is also presented in blog format.

Title of the paper : A Tools’ Trip.

Author or topic : “Who is Flora?” by Travis Alber.

Abstract : Let’s take a trip through “Who is Flora?” tools.

I have divided my web page into two Indexes in order to make its structure similar to the hypertext “Who is Flora?”.  In the Primary Index you can find a biography of the author, Travis Alber, her own description of her hypertext “Who is Flora?” and also the original project from where the idea of this hypertext came. I’ve added my first impressions, the rules and tools I’ve followed and used to read the hypertext, an inventory of all of those tools, the structure of the hypertext from my point of view and a conclusion.

And then at the Secondary Index you can find the clues to read my web page, the structure of my Second Paper explaining why I’ve done it this way, my personal opinion of the subjects and my Blog Process of the Second Paper with links to all of my blog entries in a chronological order.

Title of the paper :  Same Day Test

Author: Inglis,Gavin

Abstract :  I’m doing this work about the space in this hypertext. In doing this work I got together with someone else who also wanted to work on this hypertext, abargues, but he wanted to work about the time in the hypertext. We got together and made a chart with all of the different ends to the story,

Then we saw how there were four different types of ends to the story, but several more stories.

The space in the story is where the different actions occur. The author let’s us choose where we want to go or what we’re going to do. Many of these places are the same in the different stories. For example: the main character’s house, the hospital, work, the museum, the princess street gardens…

And most of the decisions the main character can make are also repeated: stay till end of work or leave early, go to the hospital or wait, go to the sea or to see Jill, or catch a bus or stay.

The story tells us about how the main character gets a phone call early in the morning and is told he might have VIH, and how his day goes. The reader can choose to up to 25 different stories, but there are only four types of ends. The main character either finds out that he has or hasn’t contrived the virus, or gets to the hospital when the staff has left and must wait another day for the results, or goes and waits for Jill to come back from work.

Plus, we found information on the author and about the author’s social context at the time, and how it influenced him in writing this story.

I have mantained contact with  abargues throughout this work.

Abstract : In my Second Paper I will focus my work on the analysis of one of the most famous authors of hypertext fictionMichael Joyce, who is a professor of English at Vassar College, NY, USA and who created together with Jay David Bolter and John B. Smith the Storyspaceprogramme. My work will be concentrated on his printed book “Reach”. Within it you can find an introduction of the steps of my work. Then there is an analysis of “Reach”. In the biography of the author you can get information about his personal and professional life. I also provide abibliography of Michael Joyce where you can find his complete work. Afterwards I give an opinion about Michael Joyce’s novel “Reach”. I have also found two interviews, an e-mail and the curriculum vitae of Michael Joyce. Title of the paper :  Same Day Test

Author: Inglis,Gavin

Abstract : The primary aspect to remark is the creation of a chart that is the basis of this study. That shows in paper the structure of the hypertext.

I’m doing this work about the time in this hypertext. In doing this work I got together with someone else who also wanted to work on this hypertext, marcpa, but he wanted to work about space in the hypertext. We got together and made a flow chart with all of the different ends to the story,

To analyze time in this hypertext, we’ve created a situation map where we’re going to represent the story and its’ relation with its’ internal time. Having done this we’ve observed that in a very short period of time (less than 24 hours) a great variety of stories occur, however, although in different stories, the action takes place in the same places at nearly the same time. This is why the graph shows virtual lines that prove it. This is the main purpose of us elaborating the graph.

I have mantained contact with marcpa throughout this work and we have cooperated along the work.

Title of the paper : Analysis of the Tools of LOVE [ENTER]

Author or topic: Paul Kafka

Abstract : I have thoroughly analysed the Tools that the author tries to transmit to the reader through his work. Paul Kafka allows the reader to enter a circle of four friends (DanBeckBou and Margot) who share secrets as well as experiences. Following the laws of hypertextual fiction, the author lays before us differents moments on the life of the main character, Dan, from which we can choose where to start. That “click” will let us continue understanding his circle of friends, as well as his passionate feelings for two different women (Bou and Margot)  and what they represent to him. This love dichotomy intertwines with his experiences as a fourth-year subintern in New Orleans.

I hope I reflect in my conclusion the feelings that this hypertext has made me revive while analyzing  the Tools that Paul Kafka kindly devised.

Title of the paper: him   (time aspect)

Author or topic: Dane Watkins (18 Oct. 1965 – )

Abstract : In this paper I worked on him time aspect analysing its text sequences. I drew a first hypothesis which proved to be wrong when asking advice to the author himself. Although in this hypertext you find some time references to the pastpresent and future, the author’s intention was to move away from traditional timelines. He inspired on dada poetry picking statements randomly from media resources, as a kind of stream of consciousness art.

You can also have a look at his autobiography and web page where you can find the artist’s statement, a current resume of his whole work, and a very interesting selection of animations.

Title of the paper : Spatial Analysis of Chicken Soup for your Corporate Ass (20th August 1999)

Author or topic : Ruth Wyman & William Gillespie

Abstract :

This paper is going to analyse the spatial aspects of this hypertext, and explain why they are the key to understand and enjoy the text. The work is taken from William Gillespie´s Newspoetry project which consisted on writing  a poem a day about current affairs. In order to have a wider understanding of this hypertext, background information about Newspoetry and the author, and also a brief summary of the stories that make up CSCA, have been presented. Moreover, a characters analysis has also been done because they are the main conductors of this story.  Theconclusion obtained will reveal us different worlds (internal and external spaces) that interweave to create a unique story under the common ground of Corporate abuse. A list of Works cited can also be found in this paper.

Title of the paper : “Analysis of the time in Winter Break

Author or topic : Eisen, Adrienne

Abstract : I will be basing my analysis on Adrienne Eisen’s hypertext ‘Winter Break’. To begin with an introduction where I will explain how to deal with this closely new form of reading named hypertext. A good definition of hypertext will be “a collection of texts interconnected by hyperlinks, which allow the user to choose different paths”. I have analised this hypertext from the point of view of time, following these paths. To understand well the plot of the story, the reading of the whole story is needed, after that I have done a brief summary of characters‘ features. Appear several spaces in “Winter Break”, nevertheless there are slightly references to time. To finish my analysis I will do a conclusion with some extra information about her; as well as a biography of Adrienne Eisen and a bibliography, where I will put all the links and information that I have checked.
